The Aye Aye animal is a type of Lemur that lives in the rainforests of Madagascar. So, If you were trying to know what is an aye aye, then this is the right place for you. It is not only the biggest nocturnal primate in the world but also one of the most unusual. It looks so strange that people thought it was a big species of squirrel when it was first found.

In the middle of the 1800s, the Aye Aye the animal was finally recognised as a species of Lemur. It was put in its own group, though, because its closest Lemur relatives are still unknown. But these unique animals are in danger in much of their natural habitat.

By 1980, they were thought to be on the verge of extinction. Mostly because local people killed them right away because they thought seeing one of them was very bad luck. Even though there seem to be more of them now, the Aye aye animal is one of the most endangered animal species in Madagascar.

The animal Aye Aye Distribution

In the past, it was a type of animal that was present in the coastal forests of eastern and north-western Madagascar. However, by 1983, only a few scattered individuals were present and to be living there. Since then, there is an improvement in their population numbers but are still not very big. However, they are now present in more places and in different kinds of places.

These cute animals prefer coastal, tropical and dense rainforests with good coverage. Aye aye animal prefers dense, tropical, and coastal rainforest with lots of covers. But they have also been seen in mangrove forests, coconut trees, and bamboo thickets. But they are in danger in their natural environment because people destroy their natural habitat, and local people are also trying to kill them.

Physical form

aye aye animal

This cute animal relates to the lemurs. However, it is one of the unique animals on Earth because it has many very different adaptations. A shaggy black or dark brown fur covers their bodies and long tails. A layer of white guard hair helps them blend in with the forest at night.

The animal Aye Aye has big eyes on a pointed face, a pink nose, and rodent-like teeth with incisors that keep growing, so they don’t get blunt. Their big, round ears are very sensitive, giving them good hearing when it comes to listening for grubs under the bark of trees.

Each ear can be tuned separately. The Aye aye animal has long, bony fingers with sharp claws at the ends that help it hang from branches. However, the middle fingers on its front feet are what make it stand out. These fingers are much longer than the others, can move in both directions, and have claws with hooks at the end. They find grubs in dead wood and then pull them out.

Aye aye animal Behaviour

This animal is more active at the night (noctural),  it lives on trees (arboreal). Even though they sometimes come down to the ground, the animal aye Ayes live, sleep, eat, travel, and mate in the trees. They are most often found near the canopy, where the dense foliage gives them a lot of covers. During the day, they sleep in round nests made of leaves, branches, and vines built in tree branches’ forks.

At night, they leave their nests and start looking for something to eat. Moreover, these solitary animals use their scent to mark a large home range. The smaller territory of a female often overlaps with the larger territories of at least two males. Male ones often share their territories with other males. They also share the same nests (but not at the same time), and they seem to be able to get along until they hear a female calling for a mate.

Aye Aye animal diet and Prey

It is an animal that eats both other animals and plants. It moves around in the trees at night and feeds on both animals and plants. Males have been seen to travel up to 4 km a night in search of food. They eat a wide range of fruits, seeds, insects, and nectar. They do hunt in a unique way, though. These animals use their long middle finger to tap on dead wood and listen for hollow tunnels made by wood-boring grubs with their bat-like ears, which are sensitive to even the smallest sounds.

Once this animal finds its prey, it uses its sharp front teeth to chew a hole in the wood. Then, it inserts its long middle finger, hooks the grub with its claw, and pulls it out. This is similar to what a Woodpecker does. The Aye Aye animal is the only primate that uses echolocation to find food. It also uses this long digit to eat eggs and coconut flesh.

Life Cycle

Before, people thought that the Aye aye animal, like other Lemurs, had a very strict breeding season. However, they seem to breed all year long, depending on when the female comes into season. When a female lemur is ready to mate, she calls to the males that gather around her and fight with each other for the right to breed. After a period of five months, a mother gives birth to one young one.

It stays in the nest for its first two months and isn’t weaned until it’s at least seven months old. The young ones will stay with their mother until they are two years old when they will leave to start their own territory. It is thought that a female Aye Aye animal can start having babies when she is between 3 and 3.5 years old, while males can do so at least six months earlier.

Predators

aye aye animal

Among many aye aye animal facts is that it has fewer predators. Because this animal is secretive and lives in trees, it has very few natural predators in its native environment. The Fossa, which is also fast and active at night, is their most dangerous predator. At the same time, snakes natural predators (along with Birds of Prey and Snakes that hunt the smaller and more vulnerable young).

Humans are the biggest threat to the them, whose populations are wiping out in many of their native forests. This is because people think it’s bad luck to see one and kill them out of fear. Many people still hunt the Aye-aye animal for bushmeat in places where they do not fear it. The biggest threat to current populations, though, is habitat loss. The cutting down of trees and building more human settlements in the their natural habitat is the main culprit for this.
